# [[Setbacks]]
Setbacks are negative status effects acquired from failing journey tasks, combat, or dangerous events. They are divided into three types:
- **Injuries:** Physical wounds like a [[Concussion]], [[Open Wound]], or [[Sprained Ankle]]. These require a Constitution save after a long rest to recover from and can have immediate mechanical penalties.
- **Diseases:** Afflictions like [[Mosquito Fever]] that require extended downtime and specific saves over multiple days to overcome.
- **Breakages:** Broken or ruined gear like [[Ruined Armor]] or a [[Ruined Backpack]]. These are applied to individual items and it reduces their effectiveness or provide a negative effect until repaired with the proper tools and a successful skill check.
**Cumulative Setbacks** can be acquired multiple times, increasing their severity. Failing to resolve a cumulative setback results in gaining another level of it.
Many setbacks can be tackled at once during downtime if a character chooses to [[Repose]].
